08/26/2008 - Torn Down!

Finally! After multiple weeks, the hul is stripped down. Check out the pictures below and commentary.

Above is a close up of the rear bulkhead and the floor. I am pretty sure most of this is going to be gone after sandblasting. My plan is to build a new floor out of sheet metal, and patch the bulkhead as necessary. I think I can salvage at least part of the tunnel. I would just order a floor but those suckers are expensive! Plus, as you will see later, the floor really needs to be reworked towards the front.

Another bulkhead picture. Believe it or not, the metal is fairly solid right below the bulkhead.

I am going to measure how much metal I am going to have to replace along each side before the sandblaster removes it. Time to get to Harbor Freight and get me a metal bender. Ye-Haw! Remember....if I can fix this with my limited skills, you can tackle a project like this as well!

A front view. Notice how the front section is quite different from a regular 'schmitt.

Two things of interest here...a close up of the parking brake that replaced the 'schmitt shifter, and the rusty seat bracket. I am going to have to fabricate at least one of those!

The ex-engine/chain drive bracket which is now just used for the trailing wheel. Since part of it is welded to the frame for the battery bracket, I am just going to leave it on for sandblasting. The cable on the top is the parking brake cable.

Almost ready for sandblasting!

How do you like my home-made restoration cradle? What, you think I just rolled it over on it's side? How dare you! 8^)

Can you see where the 'schmitt is welded to the DKW?

This does not look like much, but this is where they meet!

Looks like fun, doesn't it? I hope to have more on the engine next time. It was an experience getting it and the transaxle out!
